COBURG REMEDIAL LYMPHATIC CLINIC
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE
Our lymphatic system works to eliminate dead cells, excess toxins, bacteria, chemicals and viruses from our body, strengthening and supporting the immune system. Located just below the skin and penetrating the muscles and other tissues, including the digestive system, the lymphatic system also acts as a transport system for proteins, water, fats, vitamins, and cells, playing a major role in the overall health of our bodies. To generate momentum, the lymphatic system relies on our body movement to gently pump the fluid back towards the heart and return it to the circulation. If our lymphatic system is sluggish or over-taxed, the fluid flow slows down and we get a build up of wastes that reduce our immunity and the body’s access to vital elements it needs to run effectively. Lymphatic drainage massage is a whole body treatment that works to move the lymphatic fluid through the lymphatic capillaries and lymph nodes, calming the nervous system, detoxifying the body and boosting the immune system. Involving a range of specialised gentle and pain-free rhythmic pumping techniques, lymphatic drainage massage can be used on people of all ages in varied situations including treatment at the onset of an injury following an accident or surgery; as part of treatment for cosmetic surgery to enhance recovery; with people suffering from fluid retention and oedema; through to assisting in making terminally ill patients more comfortable and easing their pain.
What to expect in your session
Your therapist will perform a brief consultation to determine your specific needs and answer any questions you may have about the treatment. Typically, a 90 minute lymphatic drainage treatment is a deeply relaxing therapy that is performed directly onto the skin without massage oil. Your therapist will begin the treatment in the neck and will progressively move further away to the extremities of the body to increase efficiency in the lymphatic system. The pressure is very light and rhythmical to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. During the treatment it is common for you to get a watery mouth and have tummy rumbling noises because of the increase in nervous system activity. It is important to increase water intake following the treatment and you may feel an increased need to use the bathroom over the next 24 hours. Lymphatic drainage should not be performed if you are in the early stages of a cold or an acute infection but is very effective towards the end of a cold or infection.
